Caacupé
Caacupé is the capital of the department of Cordillera and has about 25,000 inhabitants
The city has the largest and only place of pilgrimage in Paraguay.
Every year on December 8, the town expects about 1 million pilgrims who flock from all parts of the country (many come on foot, by bus or moped!) to participate in a kilometer-long procession of lights.
The largest house of worship in Paraguay, the Basilica of San Francisco, was visited and consecrated by then Pope John Paul II in 1988.
In Caacupé you can also eat very well at Albert Grauer, a trained cook & butcher. Since September he also offers apartments for guests and vacationers. You can contact him directly - see: "Albert Restaurant Pizzeria" - a top recommendation for vacationers in Paraguay.
